Applied Physics

About this role

About the Role What if your years of physics training could directly shape how AI understands the physical world — from quantum mechanics to thermodynamics? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge AI models, expose their blind spots, and help ensure they reason in ways that actually respect the laws of the universe. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. No AI background needed — just deep mastery of physics and a sharp, rigorous mind. - Organization: Alignerr - Type: Hourly Contract - Location: Remote - Commitment: 10–40 hours/week What You'll Do - Design advanced, open-ended physics problems — think PhD qualifying exam difficulty — that require multi-step reasoning and mathematical derivation - Author rigorous "golden response" solutions with precise step-by-step workings, correct physical constants, and flawless unit conversions - Audit AI-generated solutions and simulations for physical consistency, identifying where models "hallucinate" results that violate first principles - Provide structured, expert feedback that improves AI reasoning around boundary conditions, conservation laws, and physical constraints - Work independently and asynchronously — fully on your own schedule Who You Are - Holds a PhD (completed or near completion) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field - Deep mastery across the core pillars of physics: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics - Exceptionally clear analytical writer — able to explain complex derivations and physical phenomena in structured, precise English - Uncompromising attention to detail when it comes to units, scientific notation, and logical proof structure - Self-motivated and consistent when working independently - No prior AI experience required Nice to Have - Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance workflows - Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL - Background in research-level benchmarking or academic problem-setting Why Join Us - Work on high-impact AI projects alongside world-leading research labs - Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you - Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, intellectually rigorous work - Gain hands-on exposure to how frontier AI models are built and trained - Contribute to ensuring AI systems respect the fundamental laws of the physical world - Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
