About this role
Overview Handshake is seeking experienced Economics PhDs to support AI research through flexible, hourly contract work. This is not a traditional economics research or academic role. Instead, you’ll apply your expertise in economic theory, econometrics, and applied economic analysis to evaluate AI-generated content, provide structured feedback, and help improve how AI understands complex economic questions, markets, institutions, and evidence-based decision-making. This is an ongoing, project-based opportunity that can be done alongside your primary employment. Who This Is For This opportunity is designed for professionals with advanced expertise in economics, including those who are: - University professors or faculty in Economics or closely related fields - Postdoctoral researchers in Economics or closely related fields - Senior PhD students or candidates (typically ABD or 3rd year and beyond) at reputable institutions This is not a traditional full-time role. You’ll apply once and, if qualified, be considered for part-time, project-based work as new projects become available. Qualifications We’re looking for candidates with: - A PhD (completed) or advanced PhD candidacy (3rd year or beyond, with coursework completed) in Economics or a closely related field from a reputable institution - A record of research output, such as peer-reviewed publications, working papers, or conference presentations - Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas: - Microeconomic theory and game theory - Macroeconomics and monetary policy - Econometrics and causal inference - Labor economics - Industrial organization and market design - Public economics and welfare analysis - International trade and finance - Development economics - Behavioral economics - Financial economics - Health, environmental, or urban economics - Strong analytical and research skills, with experience evaluating complex economic problems formally and rigorously - Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail - Ability to work independently and follow detailed project guidelines
